HR Trends in 2010

During the recent economic downturn, many companies faced staff reductions and restructuring.  HR departments are now focusing more on improving performance and contribution of their remaining employees.  There is a noticeable trend in 2010 of investment in leadership and performance management training and tools.  It has been proven that stronger leadership leads to higher employee contribution and an increase in employee performance will lead to an improvement in the organization’s overall results.

While still operating on conservative budgets, the companies that focus on achieving more with the people and resources they have will be further ahead.  And when the need arises to hire another staff member, companies are taking their time to hire individuals that are the right fit with their company.  Experiencing a downturn and currently participating in the slow economic recovery has pushed companies to be clearer with their intentions and development of organizational strategies.

The growing economy, although slow to recover, will create opportunity for knowledge workers or hard-to-find skilled workers to look for better opportunities.  Organizations are urged to ensure they have strong retention strategies in place.  After working hard to trim off the organizational excess and retain their best resources, employers now need to start focusing on keeping those people that remained with them through the tough challenges.
