Changes are coming to the BC Employment Standards Act

BC Government is proposing the following – subject to approval

  • Start pregnancy leave 13 weeks prior to due date (increased from current 11)
  • Take the full 18 months leave to align with the recent EI changes (spreading 12 months of EI leave over 18 months) and ensuring job protection for the full 18 months
  • 52 weeks unpaid leave if child is missing due to crime (brand new)
  • 104 weeks if child under 19 passes away in any circumstance (unpaid). Up from current bereavement of 3 days
  • Compassionate care leave – up to 27 weeks unpaid (up from current 8)
